Tragic Tottenham

It seems history is repeating itself for Spurs after the sacking of Antonio Conte and, almost a month later, Cristian Stellini following the conclusion of Tottenham’s diabolical performance against Newcastle, losing the contest 6-1.

There is a resemblance between the departure of previous Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho in 2021, as both managers have been withdrawn with only a few games left on the calendar. Likewise, with the appointment made at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, Ryan Mason will take charge of Tottenham Hotspur until the end of the season as interim manager and will be tasked with dragging Spurs across the finish line.

The search for Conte’s successor continues with Naglesmann at the top of their list followed by Feyenoord’s manager Arne Slot, Luis Enrique and Burnley’s Vincent Kompany. After being replaced at Bayern Munich by Thomas Tuchel, Naglesmann is currently without a club and has his eyes fixed on a job in the Premier League. Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, is looking to lure him to the club and take over at the beginning of the 2023-24 season. He was scouted by rival London club, Chelsea who are looking to finalise a deal with Mauricio Pochettino to take over as the Blue’s successor to Graham Potter. This will be received very bitterly by most Tottenham fans as they have highly requested the Argentinian to make a return to the North London club after being sacked by chairman Daniel Levy in 2019.

Daniel Levy has made an apology via social media this afternoon, claiming that the defeat against Newcastle was “wholly unacceptable” and takes “collective responsibility” alongside “the Board, the coaches and players”. There is a desperation for positive performances in the race for European football next season, as Tottenham currently sit in fifth place well out of reach of Manchester United and Newcastle who both sit on 59 points, six points ahead of Spurs with games in hand. Aston Villa, Liverpool and Brighton are ready to surpass the struggling North London club in the table throughout the final phase of the season. Villa has won 9 of their previous 10 premier league matches and will face Spurs on the 13th of May with what seems to be a crucial contest in anticipation for European football. Liverpool plays Tottenham on Sunday in another critical match as Klopp’s men have one game in hand and are on good scoring form following their brutal 6-1 victory against Leeds. The Reds have scored eleven goals in their previous three games in the premier league and are hungry for more after witnessing Tottenham’s horror show in defence on Sunday. Brighton has three games in hand over Tottenham and could leapfrog the Lilywhites into fifth position by a 5-point margin if they receive full points.

The outcome of Tottenham’s campaign this season seems extremely unclear with the appointment of interim manager, Ryan Mason after the sacking of Cristian Stellini and his coaching staff. Could Spurs pick up form again and finish the season on a high? Will Mason stick with Conte’s conventional back five or convert to a fragile back four? These are questions which will be answered in Thursday's contest against Manchester United.
